Knights open in Florida; Reindeer Travel to Timberland | Preparatory sport

Each Berkeley School District football program is launching new campaigns in the football arena on August 19.

However, no one does it as brilliantly as Stratford High School. The Knights travel to Orlando, Fla. for their first-ever out-of-state scrimmage. Kickoff from Universal Studios Sports Complex against Avon, Ohio is set for 6 p.m

“I really appreciate our administration,” Stratford coach Danny McDaniel said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our kids to go and play at Universal Studios. We have children who have never been there. It kind of fell into our laps. Our children are very happy about this challenge.”

The knights leave in the morning on the day of the game and stay overnight. McDaniel has to return the next day to help his daughter get into Anderson University on Saturday. He expects some of the team to spend a quick vacation in the Sunshine State.

On the field, Avon presents a tough challenge for the Knights. The “Eagles” have not tasted defeat in the last dozen seasons. Since 2010, Avon has gone 136-19 with 12 straight campaigns of 10 wins or more.

“We know they have a very serious program,” McDaniel said. “I have a couple of friends from here who say they are very good for a long time. We had the opportunity to exchange films from last year and they are a joint team. Defensively, they are 4-3. They are very well trained and disciplined.”

Stretford gets extra time to recover and prepare for the Sept. 2 game in Lexington. Knights is out on August 26.

Closer to home, Berkeley travels to Timberland, Cane Bay travels to Beaufort, Cross Heads travels to Calhoun Academy, Goose Creek hosts South Florence, Hanahan welcomes Georgetown, Northwood Academy travels to Greenwood Christian, Philip Simmons moves to Andrews, and St. -Jones Christian hosts The The Royal Academy.
