Short-term training can lead to technology jobs without a college degree

Some American states allocate money for high school graduates so they can gain skills that will help them get a job in tech without college degree.

One example is northeastern Connecticut. It has invested $70 million to provide youth and adults with short-term training programs that can lead to high-paying technology jobs.

Some states see such programs as a good solution as college costs continue to rise and companies struggle to find skilled technology workers.

The programs are known as “non-degree skills training”. They helped people like Mohamed Sek, who dropped out of college after two years. Seck said he wanted to work in technology, but the classes he was offered in a traditional college program “were not very interesting to him.” He also said traditional college takes too long to finish.

So Sek decided to take part in a one-year computer training program run by a non-profit organization. Today, the 25-year-old teaches computer coding at a training center or academy in Stamford, Connecticut. Seck said friends who graduated from the program also have good jobs.

The academy where Sec teaches is run by a company called Synchrony. Instructors teach web design, management, and other important subjects to current high school students and recent high school graduates.

Nicole Samaniego is one of the students. She told an online publication about it Hechinger report that at first she wanted to study engineering. But after classes at the academy, she had other ideas. “After doing this program for almost five months, I knew I wanted to change my career,” she said.

When she begins her studies at the University of Connecticut later this month, she will focus her research on computer science. For students who do not plan to attend college, the academy offers job search assistance.

Niall Dammando is the HR leader for Connecticut strategy. He said academies like the one run by Synchrony can help the state’s finances. This is because skilled tech workers are likely to make more money and pay more in state taxes. Dammando said it was real stimulus for the state to employ workers in higher paying jobs.

Bridget Gray works at the non-profit organization [email protected] It seeks to force employers to hire people without a higher education. Gray said her own son dropped out of college after one semester and took classes at a group called Per Scholas, which offers technology education both online and across the United States. She said her son now earns more than $90,000 a year at age 27.

A study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce found that people who do get a college degree earn about 84 percent more over their lifetime. But not everyone can go to college, pay for it, or do well in college.

David Suh heads the “Work for the Future” organization. He said the college model that has existed for the past 40 years doesn’t work for everyone. And that’s especially true for students who are black, Hispanic, or whose families don’t make a lot of money. “We need to find a better way to serve these students,” Suh ​​said.

Brad Gershbein of the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research agrees. In the past, he said, employers would hire inexperienced workers and then train them for better jobs as they matured. But at some point, that model became expensive, and businesses decided to rely on colleges to provide such training.

But now many enterprises are in great need of qualified workers. To meet this need, some companies are creating their own academies or hiring students from places like Synchrony. Big tech companies like IBM and Google have started their own programs because they can train workers faster than universities.

However, some businesses have been downsizing recently due to concerns about the economic downturn. Tech companies that have announced layoffs include Robinhood, Oracle, Shopify, SoundCloud, Netflix and Coinbase.

Such cuts lead to more people looking for work. As a result, industry experts say that when a company is considering hiring two people with similar skills, the one with the higher education is more likely to get the job.

Anthony Carnevale is director of the Georgetown Center for Education and the Workforce. He said that while vocational training is good, it’s not 100 percent right to tell people they can’t benefit from higher education.

One reason companies may hire college graduates is because they believe they may have better communication and teamwork skills.

To compensate, one nonprofit vocational training organization called YearUp also aims to provide such instruction. Gerald Chertavian, who heads the organization, said YearUp includes training on how people can succeed in an office environment, not just learning how to write code or design websites.

After all, even experts who say getting a college degree is a good thing admit that there can be reasons not to go to college. “The best outcome is that people have a choice,” said Carnevale, of Georgetown. “And this is us to provide that any choice leads to good work.”
