Owning a private jet is one of those far-fetched luxuries that the average person can only dream of on a five-hour domestic flight in cramped economy class.
For super-rich people, a private jet is not only a luxury, but also a very profitable business. Celebrities can enjoy traveling wherever they want, and when they’re not in the air themselves, they can charter a plane for others.
But while owning a private jet may sound like a dream, it can be a nightmare for the environment.
Earlier this month, Kylie Jenner came under fire for a 17-minute private jet flight from Camarillo to Van Nuys. According to Google Maps, the flight only cut about 30 minutes off the trip.
Experts estimate that about two tons (also known as metric tons) of carbon dioxide are released into the air per hour of flight aboard a private jet, meaning that Jenner’s flight could have released about half a ton, or 500 kilograms, of CO2. short flight Meanwhile, the average person produces about 8 tons of CO2 per year.
A 2021 report by TransportEnvironment.org found that private jets pollute 5 to 14 times more than commercial aircraft per passenger and 50 times more than trains. And of all the carbon dioxide pollution produced by airplanes, just 1% of people account for 50% of all emissions.
So who are the worst criminals? Well, we may not know for sure, but thanks to the Twitter account @CelebJets, the same account that tracked Jenner’s flight, we have a pretty good idea which airplanes owned by celebrities are the culprits.
Yard, a marketing and data analytics company, used CelebJets data to rank celebrity jets that pollute the air. And despite the headlines about Kylie’s flying habits, she didn’t even make the top 10.
These are the celebrities whose private jets emit the most CO2:
1. Taylor Swift
The pop star’s PJ is the plane with the highest CO2 emissions that CelebJets and Yard have tracked.
“Having taken a total of 170 flights on her private jet since January, Taylor has accumulated 22,923 minutes in the air – 15.9 days. Quite a sum, considering she’s not currently touring,” Yard wrote in his analysis.
Since then, Swift’s representatives have criticized the rating, attributing much of the flight time to other people who leased her plane.
The star’s reps released a statement to Rolling Stone, saying, “Taylor’s jet is regularly rented out to others. . . . To attribute most or all of these trips to her would be patently incorrect.”
However, the plane itself tops the list of celebrities.
2. Floyd Mayweather
The retired boxer became second for the first time in his career. His shortest flight in 2022 was a 10-minute flight with a landing in Las Vegas.
3. Jay Z
According to the Yard, the rapper, producer and husband of Beyoncé took 136 flights on his private jet, which resulted in 6,981.3 tons of CO2 emissions. Jay-Z, like Swift, is currently not on tour.
The rapper, however, has some leeway. Jet was acquired by the Puma shoe company, whose creative director is Jay Z. According to Rolling Stone, this plane is seen as a bonus for athletes who have signed a contract with the Puma brand.
4. Alex Rodriguez
Baseball legend turned business mogul A-Rod has flown more than 100 flights this year. The average flight time is about 80 minutes. His flights this year caused more than 700 times the CO2 emissions of the average person in a year.
5. Blake Shelton
Country superstar and “The Voice” judge Blake Shelton is one of the more surprising offenders on the list. His jet has spent more than eight days in the air since January, including several short flights between Oklahoma and Texas. It is not known how many of those flights also included Gwen Stefani as a passenger.
6. Steven Spielberg
Hollywood director Steven Spielberg has traveled around the world to tell unique stories and give a glimpse of how other parts of the world live. He apparently conducted his research personally, making 61 flights aboard his private jet in 2022. Shortest: 48-mile flight in the Netherlands from Amsterdam to Rotterdam.
7. Kim Kardashian
Older sister Kylie takes first place in the ranking of the Kardashians. Her flights (or at least the flights of her plane) emitted 4,268.5 tons of carbon dioxide in 57 flights this year. According to the study, this is 609.8 times more than the average person throws away in a year.
8. Mark Wahlberg
Marky Mark’s plane is the biggest polluter in the acting community. This year, his plane made 101 flights. The shortest was a quick trip from Van Nuys to Palm Springs, which took about 30 minutes.
9. Oprah Winfrey
Flying on a private plane is probably one of Oprah’s favorite pastimes. “Winfrey’s $75 million private jet travels an average of 81.13 minutes at a time with an average length of 101.26 miles,” the Yard reported.
One of her shortest flights was from Van Nuys to Santa Barbara, where she owns a home in Montecito. This flight lasted just over 15 minutes and emitted the equivalent of half a ton of CO2.
10. Travis Scott
Rapper SICKO MODE is Kylie Jenner’s partner and the father of her two children. It’s unclear how many times the pair have flown together, but Jenner was criticized earlier this month for posting a photo of the pair standing on a tarmac next to their private jets with the caption: “Do you want mine or yours?”
Scott is responsible for averaging the shortest flights of anyone on the top 10 list. His flights in 2022 averaged less than eight miles per trip. you read that right eight.
Again, it’s important to note that just because a celebrity owns a plane doesn’t necessarily mean she was on board. Renting or borrowing private jets from others is very common in the jet set community. This list only includes celebrity jets tracked by @CelebJets, not those owned by millionaires and billionaires who are likely responsible for a lot of the emissions.
