UAlbany announces music and theater performances for 2022-23

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The University at Albany Department of Music and Theater has announced its 2022-23 season of performances. The music program will feature 24 performances, and the theater program will feature three full productions of five to six performances in each performance.

Guest artists, teachers and students will perform in the concerts. All performances will take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center at 1400 Washington Avenue.

Musical performances

  • Education, liberation! (or I know why the caged bird sings), September 11 at 3 p.m
    • Singer, songwriter, and jazz vocalist Kyra Gaunt returns to share stories of courage, vulnerability, and liberation from overcoming performance anxiety and the emotional trauma of her upbringing and teaching music, sociology, and anthropology since 1996.
  • Schubert’s Trilogy, October 3 at 7:30 p.m
    • Pianist Kwok-Wai Lio presents Schubert’s last three sonatas for solo piano.
  • Choir hour on October 29 and April 22 at 2 p.m
    • The UAlbany Chamber Singers and the UAlbany Community Chorale perform music from a variety of styles and cultures.
  • UAlbany Symphony Orchestra and UAlbany Concert Band, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m
    • Two UAlbany ensembles present a joint program.
  • Bach on Broadway, November 18 at 7:30 p.m
    • Students of the vocalist department will perform their favorite classical and modern songs.
  • UAlbany Jazz Band, Nov. 21 and April 24 at 8 p.m
    • Under the direction of Keith Pray, this student and community ensemble presents classical and contemporary jazz concerts.
  • Student concerts on December 2 and April 26 at 6:00 p.m
    • Performers demonstrate their vocal and instrumental talents during training.
  • Festive concert on December 4 at 3 p.m
    • Chorale, chamber singers, concert band, jazz band and symphony orchestra team up with student groups Serendipity, Pitch Please, Earth Tones for a concert celebrating the season.
  • Twelve Drummers Drummin’, December 5 at 7:00 p.m
    • The UAlbany Percussion Ensemble performs.
  • Festival Choir and UAlbany Chamber Singers, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m
    • This joint concert by the UAlbany Chamber Singers and the Festival Holiday Choir features traditional holiday music.
  • Hilary and Duncan Cumming, February 5 at 3 p.m
    • This pair of teachers will perform music for violin and piano by William Grant Still and Robert Schumann.
  • Albagli and friends, February 17 at 7:00 p.m
    • Faculty Richard Albagli and William Lauricella perform a duet recital on drums.
  • Contemporary music festival on March 6 at 7 p.m
    • The UAlbany Percussion Ensemble performs with the Empire State Youth Percussion Ensemble.
  • Concert in Kruse on March 8 at 7 p.m
    • The UAlbany Concert Band performs in the Arena Theater.
  • UAlbany Symphony Orchestra, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. and April 30 at 3 p.m.
    • The ensemble performs works from the era of baroque, classicism and romanticism of the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • Akina Yura on March 25 at 7 p.m
    • A guest pianist will return for a solo concert of beloved and rarely heard works.
  • Opera Project, April 2 at 3 p.m
    • The choral repertoire of opera and oratorio is explored with the participation of student soloists.
  • Festival of youth movements on April 15 at 7 p.m. and April 16 at 3 p.m.
    • The annual festival features performers of all ages from across the Capital Region on the first night and the Albany/Berkshire School of Ballet on the second night.
  • Trumpet sounds, Drum Road, May 1 at 7 p.m
    • The UAlbany Concert Band and the UAlbany Percussion Ensemble present a joint program.

    • August Wilson’s play takes place in 1936. A boy, Willy, tries to get his sister to sell the piano so he can buy land. His sister has already turned down several offers because the antique piano is covered in incredible carvings detailing the family’s escape from slavery. Boy Willy tries to convince his sister that bygones are bygones, but she’s scarier than he expected.
